Abstract

We investigated the correlates of adverse childhood
experiences in young people, through a correlational, crosssectional,
comparative design. As expected, the moreyoung
people have experienced abuse early in their life, the less they
report scores at self-esteem, intuitive eating and body
appreciation. In return, we did not find an association between
body mass index and self-reported abuse. We suggest that
ideals of an athletic, thin, attractive body outweigh the
association between body mass index and adverse childhood
experiences in young people. Otherwise, these body ideals
may not have this influence with age, the association
becoming significant in adulthood.
